介系詞片語是由「介系詞」起頭，「名詞」或「代名詞」結尾的兩個或兩個以上的字群所組成。這個名詞或代名詞又稱為介系詞的「受詞」。
介系詞與受詞之間還可以有修飾詞。

介系詞片語基本上有三種功能：
當名詞使用，作為句子的主詞或補語
當形容詞使用，修飾名詞或作為補語
當副詞使用，修飾動詞、形容詞、其他副詞、或修飾整個句子。
Before breakfast is a good time for swimming.
當名詞使用，作為句子的主詞
The book on the desk is mine.
當形容詞使用，修飾名詞
The clock stopped working over an hour ago.
當副詞使用，修飾動詞
The book on the desk is hers.
桌子上的書是她的。
當形容詞，用以修飾名詞 book。這是一種限定用法。
She put the book on the desk.
她把書放到桌子上。
當副詞，用以修飾動詞 put，這裡的 put 是過去形式。
His engineering training was of great value during the war.
在戰爭期間，他的工程訓練是很有價值的。
of great value 作主詞 training 的補語。
Anthony runs awkwardly in this new pair of shoes.
安東尼穿這雙新鞋子跑得很笨拙。
in this new pair of shoes 修飾動詞 runs。
Lori‘s present arrived just after her birthday.
洛瑞的禮物在她的生日剛過後才到達。
after her birthday 修飾動詞 arrived 。
